MSPs have plenty of data; but this data is typically spread across multiple systems, like a PSA, billing system and CRM. Enabling your teams with the right data at the right time helps make everyone work smarter and more efficiently, but that's difficult to do when your data is hosted across multiple platforms that don't connect to each other.

On this episode of MSPradio, we chat with Ben Smith, VP of Product & Support at Bedrock Data, about how MSPs and small businesses can make more sense out of their data and make sure that their employees have access to the information they need.

Highlights include:

there's a lot you can do to save a lot of your own time as well. One of the reasons we found a Bedrock Data was to really allow people to save all of this time spent dealing with spreadsheets and uploads and downloads and it really is something that the smaller the company you are, the more important it is to automate as much of your back office as you can. Without it you end up not being able to compete at a higher level. The enterprise companies out there have always had these massive operations teams to do all of this work for them and multi-$100,000 a year tools. Well not having it at the SMB level really prevents a lot of folks from actually getting kind of the ramp that they need to take off because they spend too much time on overhead.

So essentially having it flow from the marketing automation where they create their list out to – here are all the people we want to invite to this, getting it back into the marketing automation program allows them to make sure they are sending reminders, follow-ups, any prep work they need to be able to email out automatically. By getting it into their CRM they are also able to determine what sales reps should go to the physical events to meet with their prospects and customers. So they are able to more intuitively send their employees to these small events that they have all the time rather than having all of their people at all of these events all the time not being able to sell what it is they sell, they are able to do this. And then actually taking all of that and getting it into the CRM where they are performing their full sales cycle and feeding that data back to the marketing platform they are actually able to see the email that kicked off the invitation and how that turned into money on the back end of the entire process.

With the demand for experienced technology professionals effectively at an all-time high unemployment in technology professionals is effectively by choice these days. One of the things I like to say is good talent is only unemployed as long as good talent chooses to be. The majority of recent studies I have read placed on employment within the IT vertical anywhere between 1 and 2% depending on the geographic location. Whatever present in there you believe it is it's truly a great time to be an IT professional in the job space today.

Areas of high demand? Well I don't think anyone is going to be surprised. It's the virtualization engineers, those servicing the cloud-based services, security is incredibly large demand today, and it’s almost like a weekly or some kind of breach on the national news. Network design and architecture, mobile device management as you have the UC environment is coming out, you know the voice engineers are in big demand. And then on the non-technical side if you will, we are seeing the operational roles being filled and I feel that being operations managers, the service managers, those types of roles I think that speaks just to the overall health of the IT industry that the operators are willing to take these nonrevenue producing roles and fill them.
In the interviewing process, you really are looking for a number of things. One, are there critical thinking skills? How do they approach a problem? A number of our VAR clients will have some sort of technical screen that is the first or second step. But you have to be careful with that type of screen because sometimes I think we can all agree that engineers like to one up each other as I like to call it – the testosterone technical interview, they just making it harder and harder and they go so far and it's like, “Well, they just don't know enough." And you can almost get out of hand a little bit.
